People TV TalkingThe third question given to our panel (back story) had to do with finding the balance between the use of technology and the importance of face-to-face relationships in discipleship.

I think I understand the concern behind this question, but to be honest my definition of discipleship leaves very little room for technology interference.  Here's what I mean.

Christian discipleship is about becoming more and more like Jesus.  At its core this is something that happens within the heart of a person.  This means transforming a person's mind, emotion, and will so that they align with that of Jesus.

The catalyst for this transformation comes from the Holy Spirit working within a regenerated believer through scripture, prayer, worship, and community.  It's a spiritual interaction between a believer and the one to whom they have given mastery over their lives, Jesus.

Where does technology fit into the discipleship process?

  1. It can be a delivery system for scripture, but the words not the device penetrate people's hearts.
  2. It can provide a list of people to pray for, or verses to memorize, but the app itself does nothing to connect people with God.
  3. It can be used to receive content from the best teachers and disciple-makers in the world, but the ideas and promptings of the Holy Spirt, not the video, bring life change.
  4. It surrounds people in worship, but it's the Spirit, not the sound system, that teaches and convicts them of sin.
  5. It collects and collates information to tell leaders how the church is doing.  Though data tells a story, it is not the story.

The main benefit of technology is that it is a fantastic distribution system for content and communication.  Since communication is the building block for relationships, we can easily elevate our emails, text, app, and website to be a substitute for face to face relationships.  This is making an idol of technology.  Putting the created above the Creator.

Besides communication and content distribution, the application we provide captures important information and forms it into a broader story.  This is the use of software for gaining feedback.  It is a powerful way to use technology.

Where do face-to-face relationships fit into the discipleship process?

Jesus called the disciples to be "with him."  They in turn built teams and established churches where people met in large groups and house to house.  Paul was eager to get back to churches to see how they were doing.  Clearly the model of Christian discipleship is one of an apprentice being face to face with a mentor in community.

How do technology and face to face relationships work together?

Discipleship is about people being together, face to face, learning with and from each other and their teacher.  Technology can provide helpful tools for every part of this process.
